A SHOW ON (SOCIETE OF AMBITIOUS AND ELEGANT PEOPLE)

labo international sape
The origin of the SAPE is unclear. It is estimated to be a more or less direct heir of the model of European dandies of the nineteenth century model who won Brazzaville in the 1920s during the colonisation. It was then a way of imitating the coloniser trying to grab her dress style and manner, first to be built in their areas, but also, secondly, to be loved by his home community. SAPE would really popularized in 1960 in Brazzaville and Kinshasa, before then develop into the Congolese diaspora in France and Belgium.

The inventor of the word « SAPE » Christian would Loubaki, handyman working in the upscale neighborhood of the sixteenth arrondissement in Paris, which would have observed his employers dress and enjoy the old clothes they offered him. The word would have left an unconscious interpretation or misunderstood his part. It is estimated that indirectly comes from the Italian “zappare” (dig), which will give in Provence « sapa » (dress) then the word « saper » (undermining cut clothing, dress..). In 1978, with the complicity of Koffino Massamba, Christian Loubaki created the first shop : The Saperie Bacongo (the area par excellence of undermining the Congo).

Stervos Niarcos is another name Sapologie. Founder of the religion Kitendi ( ” tissue ” or ” material” in Lingala ). The deceased Papa Wemba, resulting from the movement of Kitendiste Niarkos is considered by Kinshasa as their last leader. In 1979, his song was already talking Matebo undermining. This appears again in France, however, a sociological study was first conducted in 1984 by Justin Danuel Gandoulou3.
